No big story, this is just my home network, situated next to my Linux box. Pretty spiffy, eh? Hey, at least my wires are labeled. When I worked at Sierra their network room with the gathering place servers etc. actually looked a lot like this. You had to step over PCs on the floor and masses of wires to walk through it.

I work for a real estate company that does construction, property management of commercial and multifamily properties and property development. I have been here for two years. My first year here, I was the desktop administrator. There was only one other person in IT at that time, which was the IT Director. It was widely known that this person was unliked throughout the company. Not because he was mean but because he was a bit of a douchebag. He had control of the entire network and would not let anyone work on it except him.

I've only worked here 5 months.. My co-worker who has worked here 16 years amazed me yesterday. In a meeting with our Director he tried to tell me that AD is ONLY used to organize users into folders like files in Windows Explorer. He said we have not implemented Group Policy because it's a worthless tool that just breaks your network and causes more problems.. We have over 2500 users at my work.. I am passing around a survey at work to have him demoted to janitor.. Layoff good employees...........Oracle goes down.....................Corporate gets a lesson learned Submitted by Unic on Sun, 10/05/2008 - 02:19.
So I worked as MIS for a major communications company. Everyone in MIS was there for a long time, I was the newest guy and was there 7 years. We had 2 Oracle DBA's. Larry & Vishal. Awesome DBA's, there was never a problem that they couldn't fix in almost no time. Worth every bit of their 100k salaries. Because they were so good there was almost never any production down time. Well the company decided they wanted to make some cut backs and just thought that Larry & Vishal don't do almost any work and get paid the most. So they give them their nice severance package and off they went.

My old boss went to a conference in New York where she learned all about virtualization. Unfortunately, it was all sales pitches and she didn't really learn anything except for huge buzz words. When she got back from the conference, she was demanding that we look into virtualization because "we needed it!"

I was working in the sales department of a small IT company (~5 employees) but I have a feeling I would've been more useful if I replaced the guy who was employed to be the developer and systems administrator, all alone.

I'm on a strict diet of 40 hours a week because for some ungodly reason, to be on salary at my company, you need to be a manager (or at least tongue the ass of the owner)

I mean, that's not over extending the capacity and bandwidth of a single T1 line, right? So, as a multi million dollar company, who gets a 100% recovery stipend for the first T1 from our francise... why would you want to put a couple of bucks a month into another T1 or a frame relay? So, what's the solution? Buy a $25,000 websense server and block EVERYTHING that isn't work related. - down, not across.

I got a call from someone who'd received a new monitor, complaining that the new LCD screen was fuzzy. We went over to take a look, but couldn't find anything wrong with the display. To be on the safe side we replaced the cheep data cable that came with the screen, with a well shielded cable.

I found this in a company I was working at. Extension cord plugged into the wall and disappearing up into the ceiling with a network cable. Probably a hub or something up there. Or maybe a WAP from corporate spies. If so, they're pretty stupid. Of course I just left it this way because it might actually have been important :). |
