So I recently took over this job from some wannabe who didn't know his ass from RJ45 jack. After cleaning up a lot of crap that was just really not necessary I found a note that said it was costing him two tapes with high compression per day for 5 servers. If this had been a larger company I could have believed it. I have 32 users on-site and about another 50 remotely. So I decided to look into what he was backing up. I opened Veritas and looked at the shares. The dumb ass was backing up drivers, service packs and even the operating system. No wonder all of his backups were failing and costing him so much. I had found notes that he was searching for a fix so he could backup NT (yes I have 3 NT4 servers). I could have understood if he was just backing up the profiles from the winnt directory, but he was backing up the entire OS and couldn't figure out why his backups were failing. To top it off, the documents and spreadsheets and SQL were being ignored. The important crap that should be backed up. I keep remembering what one of my instructors told me in my first Linux class, "90% of the practising doctors out there graduated at the bottom of their class." I guess this also goes for admins. |
