I'm on a strict diet of 40 hours a week because for some ungodly reason, to be on salary at my company, you need to be a manager (or at least tongue the ass of the owner) So, two weeks ago I asked for salary because I knew of a few projects that would require massive overtime, late night and weekend work. They declined, gave me a stellar review stating "We don't know what we would do without you" and then proceeded to tell me that they couldn't afford to give me a raise for the 3rd year in a row and that I'm the highest paid hourly employee and I even make more than some of the controllers... I make what most entry-level sysadms make and I've been doing this since 1999. Ask me why I stay here, I won't have an answer. So, last week, we moved all our websites from one provider to another and changed all the DNS records over to the new provider. The website is not active, please call support Now, we would have just swapped it back to the old provider, but the sites were due to expire on Monday September 1st... so we'd be without a website. Now, to preface this particular Friday... I had about 3.5 hours of overtime built up from some late night projects prepping the back ends of the site and changing over all the images to the new servers. So I came in around noon and was scheduled to leave around 5pm so not to go into overtime (I was written up a week before for 5 minutes of overtime) So, I call support and ask them to activate the site. How many guys do YOU expect to have on the support line the Friday of a long weekend? well, if you guess one, you win a cookie. And if you also guessed that Mr. Ipickedtheshortstraw was in ANY power to activate anything beyond his power button on his monitor, I'd have to ask for the cookie back. He puts me on hold, calls the L2 support, who graciously ignores his call. He calls our account manager, who was probably already drunk on a boat and dropping his buzzing cellphone into the drink. And then gets back to us and says "I have a few more numbers to call, try me back in 20 minutes. So, I hang up and start prepping to move the sites back to the old sites because ONE day without a site (Monday-Tuesday) is better than a whole weekend without any site. Little did I notice, it was about 4:49pm at that point. Now my boss is sitting at the door asking me to leave so I don't go into overtime. So... um... I explain the situation and he tells me I have to go regardless. And so, without flipping the sites back... I shut down my laptop and go home. I also make sure to drive into the mountains of New Hampshire for the weekend without charging my Blackberry, only to return on Tuesday to find that the sites are still fucked because my boss tried to fix it himself. I still haven't been offered salary. - down, not across |

Been there....
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 11/21/2008 - 20:40.After numerous years of loyalty and through bad times, I sucked it up and stayed with a below than average sysadmin pay for a "small business". After 7 years, 3 of the last with no major increase to, I started to push the execs a little.
Got the same song and dance and indicated even the controllers were not getting what I was asking for. I pushed still and each time I went into the office to complain, I came out with 2k increases. At this rate I would have to go in there 20 - 30 more times to catchup with the current salaries at that time.
I was the only IT person for the WHOLE company that had multiple VPN sites across multiple states and maintained Exchange, Citrix, and various other custom DB apps.... but again this was a "small business" that cannot afford high-end IT.
Well sure an opportunity came up that exceeded my expectations and I sure did not waste two seconds to think what I should do. I walked out with a BIG smile on my face after showing my offer letter. You could almost here me screaming in my mind, "SEE I TOLD YOU!!!" Suffice to say they had me try to train another person during my last two weeks on how to be a sysadmin. At least the guy knew how to reboot the servers.
The end of the story is this. I checked back with this new IT guy after several months and he's still there pulling out his hair as he had an outside consultant there whenever something broke...what a shock! I asked him what they ended up giving him as I was 'concerned' they were ripping him off and I find out that they ended up giving him what I was asking for the whole time!
Anyways, I'm MUCH happier in my current setting where I work with a team of people and I have in no way reach the ceiling of my pay here! Glad to be where experience is appreciated.
Love this site, it's great to see others that suffer the same affliction I do. You can only bang your head against the wall yelling, "WHY ME!!" so many times.
I so worked with this guy...

Do you get up in the morning and say: "Time to go to work and make some cash."
Or:
"Crap! I have to go to work...AGAIN!"
sounds like its time to walk

That's what happens when your boss is cheap
Submitted by Mobius (not verified) on Sun, 09/07/2008 - 16:01.Love the last part where the boss tried to fix it himself lol. I know why they are so cheap in getting you a raise. You've asked before they said the same thing I assume? And they see that you are still here working for them, there's no incentive for them to do it. Unless you threaten them that you leave, I guess you will stand a bit more chance in getting a raise I certainly think you deserve.
Classic
