Problem with blip.tv - solved

Hey Josh,

First of all, please accept the apologies of the entire blip.tv team for the problem that you experienced using our service. We've tracked down the cause of the issue and we have solved it. We'd like to have you back, and we'd also like to pay your BitGravity bill.

The problem, very simply, was this: We added two new nine terabyte file servers recently but one of our CDN partners didn't properly register them in their system.

When we add new file servers we register them with our storage cluster, and then ask our CDN partners to register them in their systems. Then we add videos to the new storage servers. Requests for the video are then served from any one of several storage servers and CDN partners on a roughly round-robin basis.

We have a server stand-up checklist for every type of server. This checklist generally includes configuration details, OS installation instructions, along with instructions on how to register it with different core services (like the database, our storage cluster, CDNs, et cetera). Unfortunately our storage server checklist omitted one crucial detail: It didn't call for us to test every one of our CDNs prior to putting a server in production. We've always done that testing in the past, but it was inevitable that at some point we would screw up and put a server into production that wasn't properly tested if that step wasn't on the checklist -- that's why we have the checklist in the first place.

The upshot was that your video -- one of the very few on the new servers -- failed to serve some of the time it was requested.

We've fixed the problem by taking the errant file servers out of rotation and testing and re-testing your video and the servers. Once our tests show that the new servers and their connections to our CDNs work properly we'll put those servers back in rotation.

We've learned a lesson from this problem and it won't happen again. And, as apologies, we'd like to pay your BitGravity bill... and have you back on blip.

Please feel free to give me a call on my cell phone. I'm at 646-417-4702 or 646-827-9773. Or you can e-mail me: mike @T blip D07 teevee.

is impressed

Whether the thissiteisdown.com crew accept that offer or not, the blip.tv offer impresses me, both because of the good communications (*never* host with someone that has poor support comms!), and because they clearly understand the power and importance of viral marketing well enough to put one of their top dudes on the case (the CEO), when a "significant" video has tech issues.

It remains to be seen whether blip.tv has as good support for the "little guy", and whether their support will scale well as they grow. But the above post is enough that I'll suggest blip.tv over youtube, to both friends and clients.

Please enjoy.
