I work for a real estate company that does construction, property management of commercial and multifamily properties and property development. I have been here for two years. My first year here, I was the desktop administrator. There was only one other person in IT at that time, which was the IT Director. It was widely known that this person was unliked throughout the company. Not because he was mean but because he was a bit of a douchebag. He had control of the entire network and would not let anyone work on it except him. So he gets in his head that the company absolutely needs to go into visualization. He went to the Brass and convinced them of the same... they spent nearly 200k on a fiber channel SAN 2TB, Fiber Channel Switches, Fiber HBA, Server Backplanes, Server Memory, Licenses for VMware, Windows Licenses, Etc. we maybe had a total of 20 servers in our "data center" at the time.....He got one physical server up... played with it... and they decided that he was going to go work for a local fortune 100 company as a "VMware specialist" Leaving me to deal with the mess. 200k down the drain, and the worst part? its not even being utilized at 5%. I was promoted to IT Director and told "fix the mess" Yay. |

Could this possible be in Irvine?
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 12/31/2008 - 11:03.I think I may have worked for this company briefly. This control freak caused me to quit after just 3 months. The company name was an acronym that started with an M and ended with a K.
Been there...
Submitted by shadow on Tue, 10/14/2008 - 06:49.One of my old jobs, I got hired on to fix the network, just a temp gig while I was working on finding a more permanent solution to my lack of income. (CompUSA closed leaving me with out a job. Thanks Slim!)
Now this company was downsizing due to the turn in the economy, and they had begun to lease out the building that they had once occupied entirely. Short version is I had to relay the entire building, then do it again because the owner had a hair up his but that he didn't want his networking equipment in the closest he wanted me to put it in in the first place.
The office kept me on to help with the load that the IT Director had, but it seemed more like baby sitting him then anything, and he resented me because I didn't answer to him, I answered to the owner. He quit shortly after to lead a department at the county in charge of setting up a wireless network in the city and surrounding areas, which got me promoted.
When I sat down at his desk and started going over his files, I began to see the level of crap I had put myself in when I took this job. Half the computers in company were using illegal versions of Windows, Office and a few other programs, the two servers that weren't in use any longer, but still running had w2k sp1 on it and were sending out tons of spam messages, and his computer had more crap on it then I care to go over. Not to mention he (now I) got stuck babysitting some web developers in the Philippines, as they started a new devision of the company. (Only problem there was no one was there and beyond reading their code and reviewing I couldn't do too much, and I was constantly reviewing coding and fixing it.)
I lasted 3 more months of that crap, getting yelled at because I couldn't control the web developers, that the owner kept having PEBKAC, and spending more money then the last guy.
After the owner started yelling at me about how I am wasting money on silly things like license for software they already had, and asking if I would take a pay cut, I decided it was time to leave.
Recently they called me to come do some work for one day to help prep the company's computers and data for bankruptcy audit...
